A £2.8 million river restoration project led by East Renfrewshire Council with support and funding from SEPA has transformed the Levern Water and the surrounding area in Barrhead, which had previously been derelict for decades. The construction of a wider, more natural river channel was completed in October 2023, with the ability to better absorb flooding and encourage more fish and wildlife, and a riverside greenspace and path network was created in Carlibar Park for locals to enjoy.

Pupils from Carlibar Primary School have also been monitoring the health and biodiversity of the Levern Water and reared thousands of trout in their classrooms to release into the river in Spring 2024.
